Gifts of the Spirit Center was initially an independent Spiritualist church founded on July 7, 1977, by Rev. Carl R. Hewitt of Chesterfield, Connecticut. This fulfilled a vision he had 23 years previously. In this vision, Carl was directed to create a healing and teaching ministry based on the Gifts of the Spirit discussed in the 12th chapter of the first book of Corinthians: “I will not have you ignorant of the Gifts of the Spirit.”[1] Paul then lists each Gift of the Spirit, synonymous with mediumship. Paul also explained that everyone has two bodies: a physical and a spiritual body.[2] When death comes to the physical body, the spirit body gravitates to the level in the Spirit World, which matches the evolution it achieved during its life.

Mediums use their spiritual bodies to act as a communication bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. As the Spirit speaks mediums hear the information using the ears of their spiritual bodies and then repeat the data to other physical people.

Gifts of the Spirit Center strives to bring spiritual truths from the Spirit World. Like St. Paul’s, Rev. Hewitt’s mission was to educate the public by expanding their belief system beyond that of traditional religions. We give our members the knowledge they need to understand why they believed in the various dogmas and religious rituals and the ability to ascertain whether to retain or abandon those beliefs. This increased knowledge from channeled spiritual masters released the heavy bonds of religious doctrines and creeds, liberating the person to live a spiritually fulfilled life. As Jesus said, “Know ye the truth, and the truth will set you free.”[3]

While Gifts of the Spirit Center shares its roots with the religion of Spiritualism, having a strong belief and reliance on mediumship, Gifts of the Spirit Center has evolved in another direction. Today, we focus and rely on the God within –– the divine crystalline energy that we indeed are. This realization empowers us to manifest whatever we desire. We are no longer separated from God and are learning to be this spiritual energy while living in the physical world. It will also eventually allow each member to directly receive divine guidance.

In 2025 Spirit has requested that we change our name to Gifts of the Spirit Center. The Spirit of Carl R. Hewitt explained why in this channeled communication.

Carl’s message from the Spirit World

The renaming of the church is part of the grand plan that we [Spirit] had to bring more light into your world. Think about it. Unfortunately, the word church has been rooted in what you term the darkness. Think about how the Catholic Church has persecuted millions of people, during their nearly 2000-year history. They killed people if they did not believe their Catholic theology, which certainly is not filled with divine love and light.

By abandoning the word church you are freeing yourself from any connotation of those oppressive dogmas and the negative actions taken by churches, many of which focused on power and greed. It is another way to bring light into your world. The renaming will allow you to emphasize the truths and the philosophies that come directly from the Spirit World. When you magnify your light as much as you can, it will attract those who lack the knowledge you have to come to the center.

Think about your organization being a rheostat. By changing the name from church to center you turn up the rheostat, making the light of your organization brighter and brighter. The brightness will attract people naturally. We are talking more about vibration than light.

Let’s say Sally walks into a room of total strangers, and she is automatically attracted to Peter, whom she has never met before. Peter feels familiar. Sally feels comfortable in Peter’s presence. Sally may later discover that she knew Peter in another life.

What happened was that Sally recognized Peter’s vibration. Sally does not understand the concept of vibration; however, subconsciously Sally’s soul recognizes Peter’s energy and causes a physical reaction of wanting to know Peter better.

This is what we want you to understand. By raising the frequency of this organization people will naturally be attracted to the center’s vibration and therefore they will begin investigating what is taught.
